Designing a garden in any space can be challenging, but the approach to the design depends on what you are starting with, the canvas of your area in which the garden will be built. You may have a completely un-landscaped, brand new home type setting. You may have an existing landscape that needs remodeling. You could also have an acceptable garden but would like to embellish it with the spiritual themes we are discussing.

Gardens historically were simply enclosures or walled-off sections of property to create outdoor rooms or a retreat. Their shape though has evolved and is essentially defined by the configuration of the boundary which defines its edge. Although not all gardens can be defined as being square, rectangular or circular, these shapes can have significant meaning if incorporated into the garden's design.

Trees, shrubs, plants and flowers all have associative symbolic meaning. Each plant or flower usually has some form of power or virtous aspect that is generally understood to bring the essence of that meaning to the owner or admirer of the plant. Therefore, just having such a plant in one's life gives the owner that same power by association.

A meditation garden can have different meanings for different people. When you think of a meditation garden, do you think of a Zen type Japanese garden with raked gravel and an island of stones? Do you envision a secluded, private retreat surrounded by lush tropical growth as in a rainforest? Or perhaps you see an area in a traditional yard that has been designated for the purpose of meditating or just sitting in contemplation with a bench or chair or comfortable mat.

A labyrinth is a circular ancient symbol that relates to the wholeness of one. The circular shape and its pathways combine to form a metaphor for life’s journey -- a path of life on a single continuum.
A Labyrinth is a perfect component for a sacred garden, as it is interactive. We can walk it. We meander along its circuitous path. Changing directions back and forth, spiraling towards the center. As we walk, contemplating our life, our thoughts go within, just as the path is leading to the center.

I recently visited a local Labyrinth with the intent to document my process of its use. I had never been to this particular Labyrinth before, so I was curious what I might see and feel.
What feelings would I have in anticipation? Would I feel anxious, excited or fascinated about what I may ‘discover’? Would I feel that I was about to consult some sort of oracle, tapping into Universal Knowledge that would give me some cosmic message that I could not get on my own?

Feng Shui applies to not only the interior of the house, but the way the house sits on the lot, its relationship to the street, the topography of the land and the elements that make up the landscaping.
As Chi energy ebbs and flows around a house, it is greatly influenced by how well the architecture is sensitive to the site and the landscape elements around it.
The front entrance of a house is the “mouth of Chi” and represents our relationship with society also informally known as the "curb appeal". Entrances, front doors and pathways should be inviting and welcoming to attract positive Chi.

Whether a garden has "soul" is not so much contained in the objects contained within the garden, but rather, one's sense of space and appreciation for what they are seeing and feeling. Your ability to "feel" the soul of a place is in direct proportion to what you are allowing yourself to feel. But you must be present, mindful.
There is always soul - or spirit, contained in any garden. How you perceive that soul or spiritual energy, has much to do with your thoughts and feelings at the time.

Zen Gardens is term used to describe a style of Japanese garden that is of the 'Kara-sansui' style or dry landscape form. It is controversial among Japanese Garden purists in that there is no historical reference to actual Zen Gardens in Japanese garden history. The term is used primarily by western cultures referring to an actual style of japanese garden that is comprised mostly of rocks, gravel and is otherwise sparse of plant materials.
