Good sized backyards without a pool or lawn areas make it conducive to create meandering
walking paths to enjoy the elements, plantings and different views from around the garden,
while creating small sitting areas to create interest and functionality.
The fountain was designed for viewing from four sides, something you can do if its a custom
design such as in this project. The backwall was eventually painted with a simple floral
mural as the owner was an artist and wanted to have her "hand in the creative part of the
design".

In Feng Shui, this dustpan shaped lot is considered auspicious
since it gathers beneficial Chi energy, thus enhancing the property and its occupants. The
backyard though was a challenge, so we spread it out into the side yard to give it more visual
interest and useability. Pool, bbq island, firepit and lawn are the major elements.

This backyard was designed so that a pool could be built later without too much destruction
to the interim landsacping. So while the owner's toddlers got a little older, they enjoyed
their fireplace, benc seating, bbq island, patio and large lawn. We designed the pool in
advance not only because its the right thing to do design wise, but also for the
Homeowners Association approval so they only had to submit once.

This small backyard had mostly poor looking bermuda grass
lawn without an irrigation system. So instead of having to rip up the entire lawn in order
to install underground sprinkler lines, we created a garden without lawn, added soil for
berms and contouring to give character and inteest, plus a sitting area under an existing
nicely positioned shade tree.

Small lot can have privacy issues with neighboring second floor windows and
rooftops. Some clients want to basically create an entire hardscape patio surface to create
more flexibility in their outdoor furniture arrangements. there is a middle way
however, the hardscape and softscape must be balanced for the area to have an inviting and
peaceful feeling.

A view of open space meadows and an east facing backyard is why
this design did not have many trees surrounding the naturalistic pool, waterfeature, spa,
gazebo, bbq grill island, putting green, herb garden, wall fountain and paver
walkways. Integrating existing mature trees is a bonus to any garden design, can save
thousand of dollars and adds to the property value.

This client wanted a small putting green and a synthetic turf area, large patio cover,
a fountain as a focal point, and of couse, "lots of colorful flowers and low
maintenance" . The challenge was to design around an existing above ground
acrylic spa that had to stay as is. Design challenges are always welcome since they are
just opportunities to be creative.
